The Wardens are a very wealthy and what looks like a happy family. Mr Warden smokes cigars 8 inches long, drinks champagne like lemonade and his job is most likely illegal because he always jumps into bushes to avoid policemen and wears a false mustache. Mrs Warden never went to school in her whole life and has piano lessons, tennis lessons, horse riding lessons, cooking lessons, escapology lessons and trapeze lessons to amuse herself. Their only son, Jordan Morgan Warden, who likes to call himself Joe does not like being rich and dreams of escaping his house to be a trapeze artist in a circuses, joining the Royal air force etc. The Wardens have 2 servants, 1 nanny and 1 gardener.
But the only part of the family who does not live with them is Joe's Granny. Not Grandmother or Grandma, just Granny and somehow it suited her. She had not been called anything else since she was 60. She was very short, had wiry silver hair, was very stingy and had table manners that would make a cannibal sick. Joe once wore her spectacles for fun and was still banging into walls 3 weeks later. She is very mean to Joe and has a nasty habit of embarrassing him during Christmas by giving him baby toys.
One day, when Joe's parents were on a trip and left Joe's granny to babysit ( Joe's nanny got eaten alive by dogs, his servants were on a holiday and his gardener got blown up ), he's granny brought him to Bideford to attend the Golden Granny Awards at a hotel. But during the awards he finds himself captured and and strapped to the Grannymatic Enzyme Extracter. He manages to escape ( blowing up the hotel in his effort ) and return home with Granny who unfortunately survived. A few days later, because Granny's trick went wrong and the whole Warden family thought she died and was now a ghost, Joe and his family moved to Australia. 2 years later Granny really did die. But deep in the Australian desert the Aborigines gather around a huge campfire and the didgeridoos throbs and wails through the darkness. If the magic is working they see an old woman walking around them with a scowl on her face. It is Granny. Looking for Joe. But she still hasn't found him yet.
This book is very amusing and exiting.
