Vocabulary List 1: Sounds


1. creak: a prolonged squeaking noise

2. screech: high-pitched grating cry or scream

3. cackle: a high-pitched, malicious laugh

4. gulp: to swallow a large quantity something greedily

5. murmur: something said quietly, or a low continuous hum

6. splutter: to speak incoherently in a choking manner

7. guzzle: a sound heard when drinking rapidly or in large quantities

8. snuffle: to breathe noisily through nose (partially blocked)

9. mellifluous: a sweet and rich sound pleasant and soothing to listen to

10. clamorous: a loud and insistent noise

11. intermittent: occurring at irregular intervals

12. deafening: unbearably loud

13. staccato: a quick and clipped sound

14. melodious: a tuneful, interesting or pleasing tone

15. snort: a harsh sound made when air is forced through the nose
