Then is the 2nd and the final book of the series of the touching, realistic books. A 183 paged book in the genre of tragedy, written by Morris Gleitzman, it continues from the last word of the previous book.
Who survives? Chaya was very unfortunate. She was shot on the head. I would have mayb considered it lucky to be gone- she already had an injured arm. After burying thier friend, Felix and Zelda ran as fast as they could, holding hands and trying to avoid all empty spaces. Soon, another Nazi train passes. They get down and lie flat. Zelda wishes that if one gets shot, the other does too. They pray to Richmal Crompton, their hero. There prayers work. They run and run until they come across a hole in the ground. There are children inside it. Dead Jewish Children. There is blood everywhere. The Nazis spot them. they hide in the bushes. After spending the night, they set off to find parents. Parents who could take care for them.
They were lucky, they found a truck driver. He told the children to hop on and to help themselves with his turnips. Zelda jumps on instantly, Felix notices a notice on the truck saying: JEWS. Reward for each Jew captured and handed over. 200zloty and 1 bottle of vadka. Felix seizes Zelda and he jumps off, together. Soon, a lady comes and drags Felix and Zelda off by their collars and ears, insulting Jews and slapping Zelda whenever she twitched. Then she calls two Nazis but pretends to not know where they are hiding. The Soldiers notice the stackof hay they were hiding in. They start stabbing. The woman bites her lip. The soldiers shurgg then go off angry. That is how they met Genia, their new parent. In the forest, she was pretending to be cold in case the Jews were around. She explains that she hates Jews. But hates Nazis even more! She dyes their hair from black to yellow. From this day, Zelda and Felix had to live by making up stories. They were not Felix and Zelda anymore. Felix was not Jewish orphan anymore. He and Zelda were now Catholic Wilhelm and Violetta, whose parents were killed and were going to live with their auntie, Genia, and their uncle, the truck driver they met before. They are now in disguise to survive.
However, someone is bound to find something fishy. This someone is Cyryl, the son of the owner of a shop. Cyryl asked if Felix wanted to be his friend, join is gang. Felix agreed. He had to pass a test. Pull your pants down and show the private. They wanted Catholics only, not Jews. Felix just turned and rejected. Since then, Cyryl suspected him.He saw Felix steal a "William" book from his family's store- a store where they sell things that the Jewish owned. He accused Felix in front of the Nazis. Cyryl was punished. When it was Felix's birthday, (of course a false one), Genia and Zelda went out to buy him a present. After a moment Felix runs to the town to give zelda her protection locket, showing who she is. He discovers them but prays it's not them. They were tied on posts with ropes around their neck, they were dead. Felix doesn't feel like a coward anymore to hide, to disguise. He wanted to kill. Amon, a Hitler youth boy who saved him and Zelda from the Nazis one night, gave him a locket, something he found in Zelda's coat, it was a locket- not silver likeZelda's. A gold one with a picture of Him and Zelda. His birthday present. He carries on him plan, he blows up the Nazis' place and stays hidden forever in the dark. He says that he is Zelda's evidence. "She was only six, but she had a heart of a 10 year- old". And he stayed hidden forver.
This is the end of the book. A very tragic end. I really wish that Cyryl never turns up in the book. This way, Genia and Zelda would have survived. Only if his birthday was a few weeks later, why November 29th? Why the day Genia and Zelda were decided to be gone? But I guess this is how life was like for the Jews and Jew supporters. I consider myself extremely lucky that I live in the 21st century where more parts of the world is in peace. No more Nazis lurking around.
